Uranus lines

Since the last post was about Uranus in the various houses (please look at the last post for more information about Uranus), and since I’ve been moving through the planets to get interpretations of each of the lines, it’s now Uranus’s turn. To review:

  • The ascending line is the location on the earth where the planet is rising. (As a corollary, the ascendant is the point on the horizon — northeast, southeast, or anywhere in between — where the sun would be rising at the time of birth). A planetary ascending line is the planet on the cusp of the first house.
  • The descending line is the locaiton on the earth where the planet is setting. (The descendant is the point on the horizon — northwest, southwest, or anywhere in between — where the Sun would be setting at the time of birth). A planetary descending line is the planet on the cusp of the 7th house.
  • The MC lines are where a planet would be at its highest point of the day in the sky, or essentially on the prime meridiem. They will be directly south above the Tropic of Cancer, directly north below the Tropic of Capricorn, or overhead (the possibility for being overhead only exists between the tropics). A planetary midheaven line is the planet on the cusp of the 10th house.
  • The IC lines are where a planet would be at its lowest point of the day underneath the earth. A planetary IC line is the planet on the cusp of the 4th house.

I’ll be using the Time Passages astrological software as well as Dan Furst’s Finding Your Best Places – Using Astrocartography to Navigate Your Life. (Furst’s book came out in 2015 and is essential).

Let’s look at an Astro Map of the whole earth for someone:

You can trace the Uranus ascending-descending line from the bottom left corner of the page and the bottom right corner. It is the bright orange-red line.

I won’t post the chart due to privacy concerns, but this person has their Uranus fairly close to the Virgo-Libra cusp, so the Uranus ascending and descending lines are going to be a lot more vertical than those of any planet that’s close to, say, the Gemini-Cancer cusp. Let’s zoom in on the Midheaven line, to start:

The Uranus Midheaven (MC) line touches the east coast of Iceland and Western Africa.

Here’s the Time Passages interpretation:
With Uranus on the Midheaven, experiences that you have here tend to change your social position in unexpected ways. You may find you need freedom and variety in your professional life when you are here. You could become involved in high tech or the media while here, or follow a calling to do something futuristic, innovative or holistic, or this place could just inspire you to do the unusual – in public. You may find that you change jobs, get a raise or perhaps even find yourself getting fired, all in the name of growing your way toward greater independence. Whether you are working in an office or on the streets, you may act on a desire to start a revolution against the powers that be, to sweep out the old and outmoded and bring in the new and relevant. Flexibility and openness go a long way when you are here, helping you make the most of the changes you will inevitably experience and helping you to find constructive outlets for your urge toward freedom.

This is Dan Furst’s explanation:
When Uranus is on the MC, occupations and professional goals can shift suddenly and radically, and the urge to rebel against instituational structures and rules can be all but irresistable, so that one goes his own way and can relish controversy and the attention of others who admire, and may envy, his spontaneous zest. Here we may identify with political and social causes, and attract others who aim to enlist our support for their agendas, or become adherents to our objectives, so that we can get more caught up in the egoic electricity of a role than in the principles we advance.

Let’s look at the Uranus Ascending line:

The bright red Uranus Ascending line pretty much crosses through Canada, the central United States, and Mexico, and doesn’t touch any other land.

Here’s the Time Passages interpretation:
With Uranus on the Ascendant, this location highlights your sense of individuality and your need for freedom. Here you may find the chance to become an explorer, an inventor or an innovator. Change and variety could become the spice of your life. Whether you decide to soar off on your own tangent or gather with others who share your particular and unique sense of mission, it serves you and the world to give yourself a lot of room to move when you are here. The urge for constant change, independence and the sense of detachment that may arise within you in this location can frustrate or confuse those around you, and may make even you a little uneasy at times. You could benefit from learning practices that help balance your energy. On the plus side, this is the place for you to innovate and to break new ground, in the life of society around you, and in your own. If you are looking for a breakthrough, this may be the spot for you!

Here’s Dan Furst’s:
Uranus on the Ascendant can bring a craving for notice and impact, as though we need to be validated by the attention of others, and may have to engage in endless reinvention of ourselves in order to maintain our position of notoriety and acclaim. We may have a turly inspiring, empowering effect on others, but the usual detached postures remain in effect, so that we resist being needed by others who expect from us more attention and interest than we may be ready to give. We may relish the role of the rebel for controversy’s sake alone, without walking the talk of change.

Let’s look at the Uranus IC (nadir line):

The Uranus IC (nadir) line is the red dotted line. Going south to north, it hits the western coast of New Zealand and goes near some Asian Pacific islands, and much further north Siberia.

Here’s the Time Passages interpretation of the Uranus on the IC line:
Uranus at the Nadir indicates that this is a place where you experience freedom and change in your personal and private life. Settling here is like trying to build a house on a pair of roller skates. One thing is for sure: your home life in this part of the world will never be dull. You could find that when in this region, you actually move around quite a bit, and prefer spontaneity over predictability. Even if you never get out the front door, when it comes to matters of home, hearth and family you will likely be stimulated and challenged by abrupt changes, innovations and breakthroughs taking place around you. You may live with many different kinds of people. You have the courage here to envision and live out new versions of tribal connection. While residing here, you may transform your sense of self beyond what you have learned from society or your early environment, fashioning a new sense of integration and stability out of your own imagination and co-created experiences.

Dan Furst’s take:
As Uranus on the Nadir lines point down to the practical, material dimension of the home, life here can be unstable, and we may find ourselves constantly moving to new living spaces, unloading personal proerty for the sake of easier mobility, and avoiding any planting of physical and emotional roots. Individuality, independence and unrestricted freedom of choice are paramount here, and we may feel driven to escape all limits and definitions. We are apt to become here the black sheep to some of the people in our families, the heroic trailblazer to others.

Let’s look at the Uranus descending line:

The Uranus descending line, again, closer to vertical than it would be if Uranus was near the solstice cusps, cuts through Central Asia ad the western coast of India.

Here’s the Time Passages interpretation of the Urnaus descending line:
With Uranus on the Descendent in this locale, in terms of relationship you tend to encounter the unusual and the innovative. People that you meet here may become important to you by way of introducing you to new ideas, new cultures and new lifestyles. Traditions and habitual mores of partner interaction may go out the window in these parts as you find yourself following attractions with spontaneity and an uncommon sense of abandon. This could apply to business associations as well. Although connections of all kinds that you make here tend to strike like lightening and may disappear as quickly as they come, they can serve as important turning points on your life journey. You could attract eccentric partners here whose need for freedom leaves you feeling alone at times. Relationships here can also have a strong basis in friendship and a shared sense of autonomy. You may find you need a lot of freedom, which could prove a challenge to long-term commitments, so that it helps to bring care and awareness to your process of interaction in this place.

Here’s Dan Furst’s:
Uranus on the Descendant has its predictable effect on our relationships. Here, while we naturally seek coperation and intimacy, we can resist commitment, and expect others to mirror our detachment in ways that are not as comfortable for them as they are for us. We are likely to form friendships, and sometimes fleeting love unions as well, with people who are eccentric and flamboyantly individualistic, though there is also a possibility of relatoinhsip with Aquarian idealists of the most admirable kind.

That about covers it, although it’s not a bad idea to post some Treasure Maps from David Cochrane’s Sirius software. The ‘excitement and instability’ involves aspect lines (not direct lines per se, but septiles, squares, and so forth), each of which has to involve Uranus. It’s highly informing. Next time.
